At today's appointment we heard
the heartbeat (the doctor has this cool Doppler that is like a speaker with a mic attached to it - when he presses the mic to my belly we can hear the heartbeat) and the heartrate was 149, which the doctor said was good (he said anything from 130 to 160 was good). He actually had a tough time finding the heartrate at first because we'd just hear these random SWOOSHes.... he said that was the baby kicking. So looks like he agrees with the sonographer that this is an active baby. I was kinda hoping for a mild-mannered quiet baby (ok, not "kinda" hoping) but I should have known better with the genes Ken and I have passed on!I'm down about 10 lbs from my weigh-in at my prenatal class (April 6th), but he's not at all concerned about that. Neither am I. :) He said as long as I gain at least 10 lbs overall, he's happy. My goal is still 15 lbs, but 10 would be even better! We'll see. I wonder how much weight I would be down if my boobs hadn't already increased by a million sizes in these 13 weeks.
Next appointment is June 22nd. At this one they'll do the usual doppler, urine test, blood pressure, and weight. I think that's when they'll start measuring my belly? It's supposed to grow 1 cm per week (eegats!). There's also this optional blood test they can do that will detect down syndrome and spinal abnormalities, but I think we're going to skip it. I mean, there's nothing they can do to correct either of those problems if they exist, so why stress over it? Ignorance is bliss.
Then the appointment after that (which will be sometime in late July) will be the "big" appointment where we get the second ultrasound and learn what gender the baby is. They also check the heart and brain and spine and probably many other things. So let the waging begin! Male or female....?
Oh yeah - HAPPY BIRTHDAY BLYTHE!!!! :)
